Black Women Initiative — sisterhood, healing, strength, and community
Sisterhood. Healing. Strength. Community.

BLACK WOMEN INITIATIVE

THE SHODIPO~ASIMOLOWO FOUNDATION

“Just because you carry it well doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy.”

BLACK WOMEN INITIATIVE

Black women are often expected to carry everything: family, work, culture, caregiving, expectations, grief, leadership and everyone else’s needs while somehow appearing strong enough not to need help themselves.

The Black Women Initiative exists to change that.

Here, strength does not mean carrying every burden alone.

Strength can also mean putting the bags down.

And when one woman puts them down, her sisters gather around her, not to judge her, rescue her or tell her to be stronger but to help unload what has become too heavy.

🖤 THE VISION

This initiative centers Black women while recognizing that sisterhood can cross cultures, nationalities, religions and ethnicities.

  • African women.
  • Black American women.
  • Caribbean women.
  • Afro-Latina women.
  • Dark-skinned and light-skinned women.
  • Indian women.
  • Asian women.
  • Middle Eastern women.
  • Caucasian women.
  • Women from across the diaspora and across the world.

Not because everyone’s experience is identical.

It isn’t.

But because women can acknowledge those differences and still stand beside one another.

Black women remain at the center of this initiative while allies are invited to listen, learn, support and help carry the load.

THE BAGS WE ARE PUTTING DOWN

  • PAIN.
  • PRESSURE.
  • EXPECTATIONS.
  • SILENCE.
  • OVERWHELM.
  • SELF-DOUBT.
  • ANXIETY.
  • FEAR.

And whatever else a woman has been carrying simply because everyone assumed:

“She can handle it.”

THE FOUR PROMISES

WE HEAL TOGETHER.

Create spaces where women can speak without performing strength.

WE RISE TOGETHER.

Education, mentorship, health, financial knowledge and opportunity should be shared.

WE BUILD TOGETHER.

Women use their different skills, cultures, generations and experiences to strengthen one another.

WE THRIVE TOGETHER.

Success isn’t simply surviving another difficult year. It is having enough peace, health, community and freedom to actually enjoy your life.

INTERGENERATIONAL SISTERHOOD

The elder woman has wisdom.

The younger woman has wisdom too.

Respect travels both directions.

An elder should never demand unquestioned obedience simply because she is older.

A younger woman should never dismiss an elder because her experience comes from another generation.

Instead:

Teach me what you know.
I’ll teach you what I know.
And we’ll both leave wiser.

COMMUNITY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE

Healing does not always require a luxury retreat.

Sometimes it is women sitting together over food already in the cupboard.

A pot of rice.
A bowl of gari.
Tea.
Fruit.
Whatever is available.

One of our Foundation principles is simple:

Use what you have, share what you know, save your resources for what truly matters.

A beautiful life should not require constant consumption.

Community can be inexpensive.

Kindness is free.

Listening is free.

Teaching somebody something you already know is free.

Calling your sister and saying “How are you really doing?” is free.
